Behind the Canvas: My Process for Portrait Art
BySascha
Every portrait tells a story, and the making of that story is as important as the final piece. As a portrait artist in Cape Town, here’s the creative path I follow to turn references, personality, and emotion into art.
1) Discovery & references
We discuss mood, style, and any narrative you want captured. Reference photos, favorite angles, and personality notes help me translate character onto canvas.
2) Sketch & composition
I begin with a loose sketch to determine balance, focal points, and dynamic lines. We agree on the overall pose and elements before paint hits the canvas.
3) Color language
Colour is emotion. I choose palettes that reflect the sitter’s personality and the environment where the piece will live, subdued tones for calm, vivid contrasts for energy.
4) Layering & texture
Portraits gain depth through layers, glazing, scumbling, and intentional texture. These techniques create a living surface where light plays and features breathe.
5) Final details & varnish
Subtle highlights, edges, and atmosphere tie the portrait together. A final varnish protects the painting and enriches the colour for years to come.
