March 2020 marked a milestone for Sascha-Lee Lawrence with her evocative exhibition at the GUS Museum in Stellenbosch. This collection explored themes of heritage, family, and memory through a striking mix of monochromatic tones and vibrant acrylics. Each piece reflected her roots, from serene hometown landscapes to intimate portraits that captured generational stories.
Highlights included a heartfelt wedding-day portrait of her grandparents, honouring their enduring love, and Letter to My Siblings, a grayscale composition symbolising resilience during family challenges. In contrast, Our Pearl celebrated single mothers with bold colours and dynamic energy, showcasing optimism in adversity.
This exhibition was more than art, it was a narrative of identity and emotion, inviting viewers to connect deeply with Sascha-Lee’s personal journey.

Honouring Heritage Through Art: Dwarsriver Valley Mural
I had the privilege of participating in a local mural art competition, creating a piece that celebrates the Dwarsriver Valley’s history and faith. At its centre, God’s hands cradle a cross pouring water like a waterfall, symbolising living water and the story of Pniel’s freed slaves who built our community.
This mural also pays tribute to my grandfather, Bernard Mentoor, a renowned chrysanthemum grower. On the right, I included Jeremiah 29:11: “I know the plans I have for you,” representing hope and resilience. Local hiking attractions were woven into the design, and a young aspiring artist, Little Bailey, helped paint stones, making this project truly collaborative.
Although the prize was shared, the experience was priceless. From night shifts fuelled by my grandparents’ home-cooked trotters and tripe to the joy of creating something meaningful, this mural stands as a testament to community, heritage, and creativity.
Dining with the Locals
A Celebration of Art and Community
I had the privilege of joining two incredible organizations, Rada and Renyaka, both dedicated to empowering local artists and nurturing South African culture. Their commitment to supporting creatives resonates deeply with my own artistic journey.
During the “Dining with the Locals” event in the Dwarsriver Valley, I showcased my artwork and connected with fellow creatives in an inspiring atmosphere. This vibrant evening was later featured in a stunning coffee table book, highlighting the beauty of collaboration and community.
A heartfelt thank you to Stellenbosch University for their ongoing efforts to uplift surrounding towns and foster cultural growth. This experience was a true celebration of art, heritage, and unity.
